2007 Pet Parade

Every one is a winner in the Burlingame Pet Parade, but some of the participants were selected by the judges for each of the categories.

GRAND PRIZE WINNER – An over-the-top pirate ship created by six Burlingame Intermediate School eighth graders won the top prize in the parade. It took the students three weeks to create their float, which was 8 feet longand had a 12-foot-tall mast, complete with pirate flag and a crow’s nest filled with live mice. Two 6-year-old rabbits, Stephen and Claudia, and a hermit crab painted with a skull and crossbones, were passengers aboard the ship. The students walked alongside dressed as pirates. The ship featured broken skeletons, a treasure chest and “smoke” (dry ice) pouring out of a cannon. The students were Robin Ngai, Kevin Allan, Danielle Laurin, Stephanie Lee, Lulu Li and Vivian Lee.

BEST COSTUME WITH A CENTENNIAL THEME – Members of the Burlingame Aquarobics swim group, led by Muffie Calbreath, took the Centennial Theme prize for “Centennial Splash,” their patriotic red, white and blue costumes of all kinds, including three dogs and a walking voter registration booth carried by Burlingame City Clerk Doris Mortensen.

 

 

BEST DRESSED PET – Morsel, a mini Yorkshire terrier weighing just over 3 pounds wore a winning bumblebee costume. The tiny 7-1/2-year-old dog is owned by Joyce Bartel of Burlingame.

 

 

MOST ORIGINAL FLOAT OR WAGON – “The Tortoise and the Hare” won the Best Float or Wagon award. Housed in a grassy, fenced-in platform adorned with potted plants, the entry was created by staff and children from Children’s Creative Learning Center at Lincoln School in Burlingame, headed by Director Sylvia Xuereb. The tortoise was discovered 10 years ago, walking down the street. The hare was rescued from a dumpster. Others in the group were Program Supervisors Anna Reinisch and Faga Misa; Antonio Xuereb, 8 years; James Bauer, 9 years; Aidan Loftis, 6 years, Christian Bauer, 6 years, Kieran Loftis, 4 years, Aaliyah Tialavea, 4 years; and Pua Misa, 3 years.

 

 

MOST INTERESTING PET – A tortoise riding aboard a cart decorated as a hobby horse was chosen as the Most Interesting Pet. The tortoise, Gustafson, wore a cowboy costume, complete with lasso and hat. He is a 2-year-old Greek marginated tortoise, and his owner is Amanda Kezar, a Burlingame resident who teaches at Washington School.

BEST DRESSED OWNER/PET COMBO – Cara Torruellas and Jennifer Romero, both of Daly City, and their mini Australian shepherd named Pippin wore matching Frankenstein costumes to take the prize in this category.

​

 

BEST GROUP – “The Lions Den” entry by Rico and Adela Castillo of Daly City, their two children, 3-1/2-year-old Christian and 5-month-old Luke, won this category. The family members all wore lion’s costumes, as did their English bulldog, Bruce.
